When he was twelve, Alfi started producing music and by thirteen, he was DJ’ing. By fifteen he had acquired his own DJ equipment and with time, practice, patience and a lot of hard work, he perfected his production technique which devotes a great deal of thought as to appropriately breaking the rules he’s spent years learning. His unorthodoxy is tempered with an essential musical integrity to each production he releases.
Alfi has a definitive signature to his tracks which is notable for his ability to float from genre to genre with relative ease while still imparting his own unique stamp, recognized most notably in the low-end interplay between his bass-line and kicks which provides the foundation for his easy-going percussion, melodic chord progressions and interacting melodies which follow, in themselves, anything but cliché dance floor rhythmic phrasing. Listening carefully, one can hear the surprisingly flowing asymmetry and the understated complexity of algorithmic riddles that reveal their answers through equally subtle progression.
His grasp for rhythm and progression provides a robust architecture for elements to play through where melodic tones seem to interact with his percussion with relative ease. Each track presents a unique complexity, individually, that when summed with the others, work to create a well-oiled machine. In paying attention to the rhythmic essence, he doesn’t slouch in terms of finessing his sound. What’s more is that he treats each element individually with how they progress, never falling into the trap of the “standard” methods of introducing them and playing them through. Be it organic sounds, such as bells, which seem to materialize through the song like petals floating through branches, or his kicks, which present themselves with finessed contours, honed to give it that characteristic flow – his attention to detail given to the quality of each sound is meticulous.
The accumulated finesse with rhythm, melody, progression and sound design translate into a well balanced mix. Each part of the machine is finely polished and when he mixes, each element’s level assumes a natural and appropriate prominence. Nothing is ever forced. No element has flaws which are masked. It is simply his easy-sounding methodology which isn’t only applied to his original productions but is also realized in his remixes for the work of other artists. While mathematical in nature, the result is a thoughtful, soulful vibe.
Alfi’s first commercial release was a collaboration with Chrysus (Chrysus & DJ Alfi – “Can They Hear Me?”), in 2006. Since then, his professional portfolio has been taking up increasing real-estate on Beatport’s servers, including remixes for Dirty Politics, Frederick Olufsen, and Skla, among others. He’s currently released under the Atomic Zoo, Audio Planet, Uncovered labels and Small Records.
